Welcome to the Royal West of Scotland Amateur Boat Club Web Site . The club caters for a number of water sports including canoeing, sailing and rowing. The club is located in Greenock on the scenic Clyde estuary. The scenery in this area is outstanding and the water is ideal for water sports. The club is easily accessible by road and rail and is only 22 Miles from the centre of Glasgow. See our location page for directions and our contact page for details how to contact the club.
SOS SOS SAVE OUR SLIPS!! SOS SOS
For some years the condition of our two slipways has been less than perfect.
The slipway adjacent to the Esplanade has had considerable work done on it in 2009, and is now much safer after several large voids have been filled in. Some work remains to be done on the seaside of the slip. This will hopefully be completed in 2010. We were able to do this work thanks to a grant (of ₤1000) from Inverclyde Council, the generosity of a local company and the efforts of Club volunteers.
The Sailor’s Slip needs work to extend it seaward by approximately 10 metres, in order to make it usable at most states of the tide. We have received a grant of ₤500 from Inverclyde Council, but this is far short of the ₤10,000 we estimate is needed, even if we can source materials and provide much of the labour ourselves.
Your support is desperately needed for this project.
We are asking for all kinds of help, first of all for funds to buy materials or provision of materials, secondly expertise in the construction, and finally in the actual work of excavating and moving shingle and rocks. If you are able to organize a fund raising event, provide materials, or give a hand in construction, please let us know.
You can contact Ian Clark on 729289, or Alan Mortimer on 07711192190, or any of the Committee members to find out more information.
Sailor’s Slip Construction.
We are planning a very simple extension to the existing slip, by using Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC), which are made of thick plastic, surrounded by a galvanised cage. The IBCs will be laid on the seabed, filled with shingle, wired together, and pegged to the seabed, then covered with a suitable concrete coating.
The IBCs cost about ₤50 each. Anyone who provides an IBC or funds for one will have their name impressed on the concrete (if they want!).
Let us have your input and ideas, and above all your commitment to these projects. Thank you.

Clear Out 2010 and Sale in support of “Sailor’s Slip” Fund
Dear Members,
This year, as every year, we will have our annual tidy-up and clear-out, prior to the “Inspection of Boats”, which is when we invite local dignitaries to visit the Club. The “Inspection of Boats” will take place on 7 th March.
This year, we propose to take the opportunity to clear out as much of the clutter which accumulates around the Club, and exceptionally, to get rid of it by means of a Sale from the forecourt of the Club.
All profits from the event will be put towards our “Sailor’s Slip” Fund.
In order to identify unwanted items, we are asking everyone to identify and label anything in the Clubhouse or on the shore belonging to them, or if possible to take it home.
We will start to clear the Clubhouse and beach on Saturday 27 th February. By Saturday, 6 th March, unlabelled or unmarked items will be placed in the racing shed.
The Sale will take place on Saturday 13 March at 2.00 p.m.
You are welcome to donate items for sale on the day of the Sale, but they must be removed at the end of the Sale if unsold.
If you have any questions regarding the Sale or the clear-out, please contact any Committee Member.
There will be more details of the Sale in the coming weeks.
The Committee.

Can you help the Club recruit new members? First of all by telling people about the Club and our facilities. Secondly by printing out the poster and having it displayed in your office, work place or where ever you think would be suitable. Thirdly by telling the committee Members about any ideas you have to improve the club. The contact details of the Committee Members are given at the bottom of this web page.

Albacore Scottish Championships
Royal West of Scotland ABC
6 th-7 th June
Beautiful sunshine and a stiff 15 mph welcomed the crews competing for this years Championships. With the Easterly breeze there was no problem getting off the shore and across the river to the Roseneath shore where the PRO set a large triangular course.
Race 1
Judy and Paul Armstrong, all the way from Scaling Dam showed everyone how to sail in these conditions, going around the windward mark then fast disappearing with amazing speed. Stuart and Robert Gibson tried hard to keep up while Crawford Reid and Issy Martin did not even get to the windward mark, a loose toe strap freed itself and the helm was thrown into a reverse summersault. At the line it was Armstrongs first followed by the Gibsons and in 3 rd place Steven Haldane and Alan Mortimer from the home club.
Race 2
Followed much the same pattern as before with Reid 3 rd and David Taylor and Ian Brockett 4 th
Race3
Started without Gibson who suffered gear failure and had to retire, but the result at the front of the fleet was just the same with the Reckless Rat taking yet another bullet with Reid 2 nd and Taylor and Brockett 3 rd
Sunday
Race 4
Started with a breeze but by the time of the start had died considerably and was quite fickle, Reid and Martin made the better of the tide up the beat and when the Armstrongs eventually caught up they sailed side by side for two legs before Gibson sneaked up on the stronger tide to split the two leaders going around what was to be the last mark, a close tacking battle followed right up to the line but again an Armstrong win with Gibson then Reid in 3 rd place.
Race5
With a ever struggling breeze and four straight wins in the bag Armstrong went home early to pack up, leaving Reid and Gibson in a constant tacking battle up the beat followed closely by Dick and Alan Downey, Reid held the lead up to the leeward mark which was to become the shortened finish with Gibson 2 nd, Haldane and Mortimer managed to get passed the Downeys and finished just in front of then to take 3 rd place.
All in all a most enjoyable week-end for all who attended and as usual, excellent support and social from everyone at home club.

Four Albacores from the RWSABC made the journey to Strathclyde Loch at the kind invitation of Crawford Reid to take part in the Strathclyde Loch sailing club regatta on Sunday 10th May 2009. "Great day" despite having our sterns wipped by the afore mentioned Mr Reid. Not only did the sun shine but the wind blew to. We were made extremely welcome by all but particular thanks goes to Crawford for taking time to help the less experienced boats with there setting up technique.
