Glasgow River Festival
The Glasgow River Festival was a great success. More than 200 people tried the rowing. Photographs of the event. More Photographs of the event by Barry Watson.
Beautiful sunshine and a stiff 15 mph welcomed the crews competing for this years Championships. With the Easterly breeze there was no problem getting off the shore and across the river to the Roseneath shore where the PRO set a large triangular course.
Race 1
Judy and Paul Armstrong, all the way from Scaling Dam showed everyone how to sail in these conditions, going around the windward mark then fast disappearing with amazing speed. Stuart and Robert Gibson tried hard to keep up while Crawford Reid and Issy Martin did not even get to the windward mark, a loose toe strap freed itself and the helm was thrown into a reverse summersault. At the line it was Armstrongs first followed by the Gibsons and in 3 rd place Steven Haldane and Alan Mortimer from the home club.
Race 2
Followed much the same pattern as before with Reid 3 rd and David Taylor and Ian Brockett 4 th
Race3
Started without Gibson who suffered gear failure and had to retire, but the result at the front of the fleet was just the same with the Reckless Rat taking yet another bullet with Reid 2 nd and Taylor and Brockett 3 rd
Sunday
Race 4
Started with a breeze but by the time of the start had died considerably and was quite fickle, Reid and Martin made the better of the tide up the beat and when the Armstrongs eventually caught up they sailed side by side for two legs before Gibson sneaked up on the stronger tide to split the two leaders going around what was to be the last mark, a close tacking battle followed right up to the line but again an Armstrong win with Gibson then Reid in 3 rd place.
Race5
With a ever struggling breeze and four straight wins in the bag Armstrong went home early to pack up, leaving Reid and Gibson in a constant tacking battle up the beat followed closely by Dick and Alan Downey, Reid held the lead up to the leeward mark which was to become the shortened finish with Gibson 2 nd, Haldane and Mortimer managed to get passed the Downeys and finished just in front of then to take 3 rd place.
All in all a most enjoyable week-end for all who attended and as usual, excellent support and social from everyone at home club.

Four Albacores from the RWSABC made the journey to Strathclyde Loch at the kind invitation of Crawford Reid to take part in the Strathclyde Loch sailing club regatta on Sunday 10th May 2009. "Great day" despite having our sterns wipped by the afore mentioned Mr Reid. Not only did the sun shine but the wind blew to. We were made extremely welcome by all but particular thanks goes to Crawford for taking time to help the less experienced boats with there setting up technique.
